Heat sink tapping and drilling case
Heat sink tapping and drilling case
Preface: In high-end applications, heat sinks are mostly made of aluminum or copper materials, which require high thermal conductivity. Some special structures quickly transfer heat, thus demanding high precision in drilling or tapping holes in heat sinks. Additionally, some heat sinks require many drilling and tapping points, often needing multiple drilling or tapping power heads to work together.
YSA precision drilling power heads and tapping power heads offer unique precision and structural advantages in the high-end heat sink field.
This case involves a well-known heat sink manufacturer, focusing on fine hole drilling and fine thread tapping for high-end computer heat sinks.
Processing material: Copper, hardness ≥85HV2
Drilling hole size: Ø1, depth 4mm
Thread size: M1.2, depth 3mm
Features: Drilling is blind hole, thread is through hole
Based on the on-site drilling and tapping requirements, the YSA precision drilling power head BD3-80 series was selected.
Advantages:
1. This series adopts a dual servo structure, with both spindle and feed driven by electric servo, suitable for both drilling and tapping.
2. The entire power head assembly offers higher energy efficiency, with taper runout within 3U to ensure machining precision for fine threads and small holes.
3. No need to replace consumable parts such as synchronous pulleys or thread inserts. The built-in drilling and tapping mode allows self-setting of required specifications without disassembling existing equipment.
4. Adopts a CNC-like control system, allowing custom second and third reference points in the program. It can be quickly adjusted to the most efficient working system for different machining parts, with an intuitive and easy-to-use interface for simple maintenance.
Tool selection: Japanese Yamawa, copper-specific cutting taps and drills
Cutting oil: Specialized drilling and tapping oil
Parameters: Maximum drilling feed rate 12M/Min, tapping feed rate 15M/Min
Drill spindle speed 6500rpm, tapping speed 300rpm
Tapping process uses 2-stage tapping, each step 1.5mm, dwell time 0.3s
Drilling uses spiral cobalt drill with top chip evacuation, drilling uses flat bottom chip evacuation method
Result: Thread gauge passes smoothly, stop gauge stops at 0.8 turns, flat end face smooth without burrs, tool break interval 5600 times/tool.
Using roundness inspection equipment, drilling roundness tolerance 0.006mm.
During the entire machining process, the machine operates smoothly, quietly, and stably, free from noise, oil, and other contaminants.
Summary: When using YSA drilling and tapping heads for this type of heatsink operation, thanks to the high-precision mechanism and extremely low runout error of YSA power heads, they offer significant precision advantages in machining small holes, fine threads, micro holes, etc. Combined with the CNC drilling and tapping system program, machining efficiency is greatly improved.
